Youth Leadership Coordinator (Long Island)

The Youth Empowerment Program of Rural & Migrant Ministry seeks a creative and experienced full-time Coordinator to help us develop a youth leadership program on the eastern end of Long Island.
We are looking for a Coordinator who is dedicated to empowerment and social justice. Most importantly, we are looking for someone who sees her/himself as both an educator and a leader.
The program is a part of a statewide program that has been on the cutting edge of rural youth leadership development for more than 35 years.
Founded in 1981, RMM is a statewide organization that stands as a committed ally with those who work for justice in the rural and farmworker communities of New York State, with a primary focus on developing leadership skills and opportunity for youth. Our Mission Statement lays out our focus clearly and succinctly:
Rural & Migrant Ministry works for the creation of a just, rural New York State by: nurturing leadership; standing with the disenfranchised, especially farmworkers, rural workers and their families; and changing unjust systems and structures.
The Coordinator works alongside youth leaders as they build VOLIY (Voices of Long Island Youth), a high school leadership development program that works for social justice through the production of podcasts. The Coordinator is also responsible for developing a regular middle school program that introduces rural participants to justice, as well as a summer youth program that involves Camps and Institutes for middle and high school students.
The position has several fundamental components, including:
- Supervising and coordinating staff, volunteers and interns within the Program.
- Appreciating the rural setting and driving great distances on a regular basis.
- Having a vision, as well as honoring the vision of the members – seeing this endeavor as as a partnership with the youth leaders.
- The ability to work in collaboration with the other members of the Center’s team to ensure that all of the goals of the Center are being met.
- The ability to effectively balance several efforts at once.
- Comfort in working with allies in the faith, labor, business and social justice realms.
Requirements:
- A deep appreciation of young people and their capacity to bring about justice.
- Experienced in youth empowerment and experiential education.
- Committed to social and economic justice in the midst of disenfranchised communities, with a specific focus upon dismantling adultism.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English
- Strong interest in working with faith and labor communities.
- Creative and flexible — realizing that this is more than just a “9-to-5” job and able to work some evenings and occasional weekends as well as a commitment to extra-curricular summer camps and institutes.
- A strategist with strong interpersonal, networking and organizing skills.
- Self-motivated with excellent speaking skills.
- Willingness to live on the east end of Long Island (the position is based in Riverhead).
- A driver’s license.
Compensation and Benefits:
This is a full-time position with flexible hours and days.
- Salary: $65,000.
- Full medical and dental insurance.
- Four weeks of vacation, annually.
- Contributions to a retirement program.
- Three-month paid sabbatical after seven years of service.
